6th April 1895 – For the second time in one season Arsenal scored seven beating Crewe 7-0. The club then beat Walsall 6-1 just six days later. By the end of the season Arsenal had scored 75 goals in 30 league games. In only three games did they fail to score.
6th April 1896 – Encouraged by the scoring of seven goals in the previous home match, a record crowd of 14,000 turned out to see Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-1.
6th April 1914 – The Islington Gazette reported that “Woolwich Arsenal” had now become “The Arsenal”. Click here to read all about the top casino news for 2021.
6th April 1918 – Fulham 2-1 Arsenal. Just 2,000 fans witnessed this poor defeat at the hands of our London rivals.
6th April 1920 – Tom Whittaker’s debut.
6th April 1927 – Distracted by the thought of the forthcoming FA Cup final Arsenal lost 6-1 to Newcastle, followed three days later with a 5-1 defeat to Sunderland. It was only the subsequent six wins in the last seven games that saved Arsenal from relegation. See also here
6th April 1965 – Tommy Baldwin’s first Arsenal game. He played just 17 league games for Arsenal before starring in Coronation Street.
6th April 1971 – Arsenal 1-0 Coventry. Ray Kennedy with the goal, and the title was in our own hands, we were now just four points behind Leeds with two games in hand.
6th April 1995 – Arsenal 3-2 Sampdoria, Cup Winners Cup semi final 1st leg. Two goals from Steve Bould (wait, whatttt?) and one from Ian Wright saw us get our noses in front of the tie.
6th April 2000 – Arsenal 1-0 Lens. UEFA Cup, semi final. Arsenal won this first leg through a goal from Bergkamp in the 2nd minute and the opinion from the media was that this was nowhere near enough.
6th April 2002 – Arsenal 2-1 Tottenh*m. Freddie Ljungberg and Lauren scored on our way to another double.
6th April 2004 – Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea. Champions League Quarter Final second leg. Jose Antonio Reyes (God rest him) gave us the lead, but Lehmann gifted the equaliser and Wayne Bridge scored the winner with just 3 minutes to go. I have to admit this is the most upset I’ve ever been at an Arsenal game, so near yet so far to a CL semi-final, still feel we’d have won the Champions League that season had we sneaked through.
