27th March 1909 – Sunderland 1-0 Arsenal. A player called James Maxwell plaid his final match for Arsenal after being rather upset at lack of game time. It’s one thing storming off, but he apparently met up with his wife, absconded from the team, headed up north and played in Scotland. Arsenal managed to get £50 out of him at a tribunal for his antics.

27th March 1959 – Jim Fotheringham was sold to Hearts, having played 76 games for Arsenal. No, I’ve never heard of him either. Whilst at Arsenal he also featured for the London XI that took part in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup if that helps.

27th March 1971 – Arsenal 2-2 Stoke – FA Cup Semi-Final at Hillsborough. Peter Storey’s scored the goals, his penalty putting us back on terms on our way to our first double.

27th March 1971 – Speaking of the double, Tottenham v Arsenal was originally scheduled to be played on this day but was moved to the end of the season… wonder what happened, you’ll have to wait until May to find out.

27th March 1976 – Leeds 3-0 Arsenal. After six unbeaten this was the start of a run of one win in the last seven of the season to leave Arsenal languishing in 17th place.

27th March 1982 – Arsenal 4-3 Aston Villa. Alan Sunderland, Raphael Meade and two from Graeme Rix). It was the second of just two wins in 11 games.

27th March 1997 – Steve Morrow was sold to QPR, he had played 62 league matches for Arsenal but will always be remembered for the 1993 League Cup final and Tony Adams lobbing him up in the air and breaking his arm while celebrating, the scorer of the winning goal? Steve Morrow.

27th March 2014 – Arsenal announced the club would play a pre-season friendly against the New York Red Bulls for the club’s first trip to the USA for 25 years.

The game would end 1-0 to the Red Bulls, Ian Wright’s son scoring the only goal for Thierry Henry’s Red Bulls side, confusing Arsenal fans everywhere.
