20th March 1908 – The 1908 Arsenal Ultras known as the ‘Torpedo Boys’ let off fireworks in the Forest ground and caused a fire. Full details here. Turns out they were rascals and used to set off fireworks and drink each town dry, around 2/3000 of them, even back then.
20th March 1914 – Our game against Grimsby was postponed after a wall within Highbury collapsed due to flooding. The game wasn’t played until a month later.
20th March 1926 – Our oldest player to play in an Arsenal shirt played his last game for the club, a 1-0 over Man City. Jack Rutherford was 41 years old (and 159 days).
20th March 1968 – Arsenal Legend Paul Merson was born. One of my favourite players to watch in the 80s and 90s, Merse ended up going through some testing times, admitting he had a drug problem, gambling addiction and alcoholism, then having to work with Jamie Carragher,
20th March 1993 – Arsenal 4-3 Southampton, Andy Linighan, birthday boy Paul Merson and two goals for Jimmy Carter won us all three points in a cracking game in our double cup winning season. Paul Dickov made his Arsenal debut.
20th March 1998 – Goalkeeper Vince Bartram signed for Gillingham. His Arsenal career was limited due to the consistency of David Seaman being pretty, pretty good.
20th March 1999 – Arsenal 2-0 Coventry. Parlour and Overmars on the scoresheet.
20th March 2010 – Arsenal 2-0 West Ham. Denilson and Cesc Fabregas scoring while bad boy Tomas Vermaelen was sent off and Arsenal went top of the league.
20th March 2020 – Arsenal remain unbeaten in the league and FA Cup in this calendar year. We also won’t be playing for another 6 weeks due to some Chinese dude tucking in to a bat sandwich.
