Our new centre back William Saliba has said that he is already looking at our results despite being a Saint Etienne player.

Saliba was bought last summer by Unai Emery for a fee of around £25m, yet despite the need for new defenders at Arsenal, the deal was that he was loaned straight back to the French club.

This season hasn’t gone exactly to plan for the teenager, he has been plagued by injury meaning he’s only played 11 times this season for ASSE.

Saliba suffered a metatarsal fracture back in November but has since made his comeback and is now playing regularly at the heart of the defence for his side, who, despite poor league form have made it to the French Cup Quarter Finals. Their league form sounds similar to Arsenal, with Saint Etienne just four points above the relegation places.

Saliba said in a press conference this week:

“For now, I’m 300% focused on Saint-Étienne, my head isn’t elsewhere. Next year, I’ll be at Arsenal, but I still follow their results…”

It remains to be seen who will be let go at the end of the season to make way for Saliba, but it’s good to see Arsenal already fixing up our defence – just need to find some goals from somewhere next!
