After an uneventful first half where we were lucky not concede, we managed to go ahead after a brilliant goal from Alexandre Lacazette who rifled the ball past Jordan Pickford on the hour with an unstoppable curling rocket.
Only a few minutes later and we’d doubled our lead with a rather dubious goal which should, in all honesty have been ruled out for offside, but Aubameyang didn’t stop to wait for the flag which didn’t come, and made it 2-0.
Petr Cech was probably man of the match for me, with a string of excellent saves to keep us in the game, and deserved our first clean sheet of the season with a fine display. Theo Walcott’s return to The Emirates wasn’t a happy one for the ex-Arsenal boy, he ended up on the losing side, ended up being subbed and sporting a black eye, poor fella, at least he has an excuse for running down all those blind alleys now.
The win sees us climbing up the Premier League table nicely on level points with Sky’s golden boys Tottenham who won away at Brighton yesterday, while Chelsea and Man United both dropped points this weekend. Next weekend, after a League Cup game with Brentford in the week we play Watford at home, another chance to close the gap between ourselves and the top teams, and Tottenham but we’ll have to play better than we did today to take all three points.
A less than convincing performance, but we looked good going forward and managed to get that elusive clean sheet at last which should give the defenders and Cech a confidence boost.
