FC Schalke 04 are the latest club to be linked with a move for Arsenal German midfielder, Mesut Ozil and the German club’s President has stated their interest in a deal, but not just yet.
Ozil will be free to leave Arsenal at the end of this season and negotiations to sign a new contract are said to have been going on for a while with no breakthrough, so it looks like the player will leave in January or if not, then next summer.
When Schalke’s head of their supervisory board, Clemens Tonnies was asked about the possibility of a return to Germany for the playmaker, he said in the Evening Standard via Kicker:
“I still have a great relationship with Mesut. We would definitely consider it [a return]. If it fits for both sides, it would be nice, the player could say that he returns to his roots, and that he plays football in this stadium and for those fans and the region once again, but it will certainly not happen next season…”
The 29-year-old has been linked with other top clubs like Barcelona and Manchester United in recent weeks but with the transfer window not open for a few weeks yet, Arsenal are still hopeful of tying him to a new contract.
After a man of the match performance against Tottenham on Saturday in the 2-0 North London derby win, the possibility of Ozil signing a new contract before January has been boosted, yet there is nothing concrete as yet.
His contract issues are thought to be due to amount he will be paid in wages, he’s after £330k reportedly, and the club’s commitment to winning trophies, the same can be said of fellow team mate, Alexis Sanchez.
I think its fair to say after Saturday’s convincing win over Spurs, most Arsenal fans will be hoping that both players sign a new deal to remain at Arsenal.
