Arsenal attacker Alex Iwobi has tipped team mate Chuba Akpom to become the next big star to come through the club academy to join up with the first team. Both Akpom and Iwobi played together at the academy and have known each other since they were just three years old.
Iwobi has developed in the first team setting at Arsenal and also helped his country to qualify for the World Cup by scoring the winner against Zambia last week for Nigeria. Since his promotion to the Arsenal first team, Iwobi has made 66 appearances for the North London club but Akpom who also hails from Nigeria is still waiting for his first team breakthrough.
Iwobi said in a recent interview with The Metro when he backed Akpom for a first team squad place:
“I don’t know who to expect because you never know at this time who will come through, but I would say Chuba Akpom…”
Akpom has long been a key name for England during many recent youth tournaments and also has always impressed during Arsenal’s pre-season tours but is still struggling to make it with The Gunners senior squad.
His appearances during his various loan spells (Brentford, Coventry, Forest, Hull and Brighton) have been sporadic and coupled with various injury problems this has hindered his progress so let’s hope he can get back to goal scoring ways soon, he would be a useful addition to the squad especially with all of our persistent injuries.
