In another topsy-turvy season opener, we ended up on the right side of a 4-3 scoreline this year as we put Leicester to the sword after coming from behind twice, and snatching a late equaliser and subsequent winner through Aaron Ramsey and Oli G respectively.
Alexandre Lacazette got us off to a flyer after just 94 seconds, heading home from a decent cross from Elneny before Leicester drew level just moments later, then took the lead in an entertaining first half. As it looked like we’d go in at the break 2-1 down, Danny Welbeck popped up to bundle in a loose ball from a goalmouth scramble to level the score at 2-2 on the stroke of half time.
Showing we’d not learned any lessons from the first half, Leicester went ahead again after Vardy was left unmarked (nice one) from a corner, and then just when things looked to be slipping away, the boys rallied round to produce an enthralling late show to take all three points and take us top of the league.
Aaron Ramsey scored our third after an amazing assist from Xhaka on 82 minutes before supersub Olivier Giroud’s now customary bullet header won the game with just 5 minutes to go.
Chelsea lost (at home to Burnley!) this weekend and Liverpool drew away with Watford, while Man City, Man United and Tottenh*m all won, so all in all, as much as we could have asked for on the opening day of the season.
Welcome back football, Stoke away next, fingers crossed we can get Alexis Sanchez fit for that one, with Koscielny still missing let’s hope AW can address our defensive frailties, namely conceding goals from corners and crosses.
COYG!
