Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger hasn’t been doing too much business bringing new players in this January, but he’s doing a great job of keeping current players signed up, the likes of Coquelin, Giroud and Koscielny have all put pen to paper in new deals in recent weeks, meanwhile it looks like Carl Jenks is off…

Now the latest reports suggest Per Mertesacker has also agreed a new deal with Arsenal despite so many reports linking him with a move away from The Emirates.

The German international has not featured in a single match this season due to injury, Wenger bringing in his national team mate Shkodran Mustafi to fill the void when the BFG was injured in pre-season.

Not too long ago, a report in Mirror claimed that the Arsenal gaffer suggested that he wants the likes of Mertesacker and Cazorla to sign new deals and now the report from The Times has it that the 32-year-old German has agreed a one year contract extension.

Mertesacker has featured in over 20o matches for Arsenal and he has managed to help win the FA cup twice and was already earning as much as (according to The Daily Star) £70,000-a-week ($85,000-a-week) for his services.

All this sounds surprising to me when I saw the report further claim that Mertesacker will be sent out on loan for the remain of the season but it now looks like Wenger wants him back, fit and playing at The Emirates.

Personally, I see no sense in Wenger offering Mertesacker a new deal as he is already slow and aging, plus we have the likes of Gabriel, Rob Holding and Shkodran Mustafi playing in that position, but as always, Wenger knows best.
