So far this season Per Mertesacker is yet to feature in a single game after picking up an injury pre-season, and it seems Arsene Wenger is already looking to replace him.

It appears that Atletico Madrid defender José Giménez is high on Arsene Wenger’s shopping list, and he’s keen to pip arch-rival Jose Mourinho to his signature.

The 21-year-old ace has strongly been linked with a move to both The Emirates and Old Trafford over recent weeks and it seems Arsene Wenger is keen to land the defender to bolster his defensive options.

According to a report from Tuttomercatoweb, the La Liga giants are demanding around €55m for the player and its highly unlikely that Arsene Wenger would part with so much cash. Especially given that he still has Gabriel, Rob Holding and the on loan Calum Chambers to call upon if required, all those on top of the injured BFG and his first choice pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Shkodran Mustafi.

Although, Per Mertesacker is in the twilight of his career it appears he’s keen to get back to action and remain at The Emirates despite rumours linking him with a return to Werder Bremen once he’s recovered.
