The first big real news of the summer transfer was the long, drawn out saga following our nice, early, shock bid for Leicester’s Jamie Vardy as Arsene Wenger went on the hunt for someone to compete with Olivier Giroud up front.
Vardy decided to stay where he was and signed a new contract at Leicester, and the report from The Sun today claims that he rejected us due to our style of football.
The 29-year-old was undeniably amazing last season, helping City to win the league with 24 goals and 6 assists alongside Player of the Year Riyad Mahrez.
Arsene Wenger ended up subsequently bidding for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Wolfsburg’s Julian Draxler, until settling on our new number nine, Lucas Perez.
However, the contract Vardy signed with Leicester City will see him remain at Leicester until at least 2021, maybe even retire there, and he revealed why he stayed in today’s Sun:
“With people like Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil creating chances, Arsenal felt they could benefit me as much as I could them, but I also thought about the tactical aspect.
“You look at Arsenal’s style of play and they don’t get the ball forward quickly in the same way Leicester do for those runs I like to make in behind the defence.
“One thing that didn’t worry me was the idea that I wouldn’t be the ‘main man’ at Arsenal.
“Players always come and go. It was more a case of seeing Leicester as a club that wanted to build on what we achieved with the title and I want to be part of that. I am happy with how everything has turned out. The dream continues,’ Claudio texted me after I agreed to stay. That’s exactly how I felt, too…”
