Deal close: Sky Sports confirms defender agrees to move

The imminent arrival of German international defender Shkodran Mustafi at the Emirates Stadium means that we have an excess of centre backs in our ranks.

This move means that playing time will be even more limited for Calum Chambers and he’s agreed to Middlesbrough on a season-long loan deal, according to a report from Sky Sports News.

Chambers joined Arsenal from Southampton for £16m in the 2014 summer transfer window and has notched up 58 games for the Gunners first team in total over the past two years.

He played as a right back in some of these games, and despite some good performances, he has been unable to hold down a regular starting spot, and has struggled to force his way into Wenger’s first team plans.

Chambers, alongside new signing Rob Holding deputized for Laurent Koscielny in the opening day match against Liverpool which ended a 4-3 defeat to Jurgen Klopp’s men, and his performance on the day was less than convincing.

I strongly believe Chambers to be a very useful player who provides cover for many defensive positions, but Wenger sees this as a good chance to get Chambers some Premier League experience under his belt, and with an abundance of defenders now in the squad, this move should work out well for all parties.
