BBC journalist gives update on Arsenal’s pursuit for defender
You may have heard already (yawn!) that manager Arsene Wenger has been on the look-out for a new centre back to partner Laurent Koscielny after the injuries to Gabriel and Mertesacker.
With Shkodran Mustafi still the alleged target for Wenger, other defender names are now being bandied about, and the latest name in the hat, is that of West Brom’s Jonny Evans, a big surprise to most people.
Wenger has already confirmed the club’s interest in the Mustafi deal and a BBC journalist has also given a crucial update on Evans on his Twitter account, saying that the player is very, very unlikely likely to move to Arsenal.
It’s thought that Wenger initially had the 28-year-old ace as a back-up plan if his pursuit for Mustafi fails but it seems, as the day goes on, the Mustafi deal may well go ahead, despite the Spanish club’s best attempt to scupper a deal.
It is widely believed that a lack of cohesion amongst the squad, and a senior, quality defender was the root cause of our opening day defeat at home to Liverpool, and Le Boss has set about stopping the rot as quickly as possible.
Laurent Koscielny partnered Rob Holding in the heart of the defence, as they shut up shop against Leicester, but it’s thought despite Holding’s impressive initial spell at the club, Wenger is still keen to bolster the defensive ranks with a more senior player.
On a separate note, it seems as though he is still considering bringing in a striker, and there’s been a lot of talk this week that Antoine Griezmann was ‘the madness’ which was sparking the imagination of Arsenal fans everywhere.
It’s thought that Atlético Madrid wanted to bring in Diego Costa, and were set to let Griezmann leave, but Chelsea decided to keep their star striker at Stamford Bridge, inadvertently scuppering any potential deal for him.
We have already played two games in the Premier League and find ourselves 5 points behind Man United and Man City, and let’s hope Arsene Wenger can mastermind some form of transfer surprise over the coming days before we find ourselves with an unassailable mountain to climb.
