Henry: What amazes me about Arsenal during transfer windows

Following Sunday’s depressing opening day defeat at home to Liverpool, Arsenal fans (including us) have been quick to point the finger of blame at our French manager and his backroom transfer advisory layabouts.

Having started the window so promisingly, with the Xhakwisition of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach, and lodging a bid for Leicester’s Jamie Vardy, many fans believed we’d turned a corner and were all set to address our problems nice and early this season.

Since Vardy’s refusal, there’s been little movement to replace our two injured centre backs, or to fill the blantantly missing world class striker, that the world and his wife/husband can see we need.

We went into the Liverpool game, with no senior centre backs, no captain, players out of position, our new £34m man on the bench, and deservedly came out of the game with nothing and the crowd spitting blood about our obvious shortcomings.

Arsenal legend Thierry Henry told Sky Sports that his former team find it difficult to splash the cash on new players, according to the report from Daily Star.

“The thing I don’t understand is, we’ve been told that Arsenal are wealthy, that we have money, that we can compete against anyone in the market, but when the season starts, we can’t compete in the market. So which one is it? I just don’t understand.

“Are Arsenal still the first choice in England? If a big player becomes available on the market, first of all, can you compete? Can you put the money on the table? Next, is the money stupid? We all know the money is stupid but you have to pay.

“And finally does the player want to come to Arsenal? That’s something we all need to take into consideration. So are we still the first choice in England? I don’t think so.”

Henry agrees with most Arsenal fans’ sentiment, and added that he thinks Arsene Wenger should buy a striker or try using both Sanchez and Giroud up front.

“In general I think Arsenal needs a centre-back and a striker, if they cannot get that striker, they should play Alexis Sanchez with Olivier Giroud. It doesn’t have to be a world-class striker, but someone who can bring something different. You don’t always win the league with the league’s top goalscorer. I finished top scorer of the league with Arsenal and didn’t win the title.

“Sometimes you just need something different and I think Alexis can be that guy…”

Personally, I agree with what Henry has said but I think the idea of using both Sanchez and Giroud up front won’t work, same as when he tried it last season.

I feel the same as Henry and 99% of Arsenal fans, I think we need a striker and a centre back! Tick tock Arsenal, another day has gone!
