Italian journalist confirms Arsenal close to defender signing, fans will love this
With just a few weeks until we play Liverpool on the opening weekend of the new season, Sir Wenger has confirmed we are active in the transfer window ‘up front and at the back’ as he looks to reinforce the squad.
Sir Wenger is said to be looking for a striker, a Mahrez, and is also desperately looking to sign a defender to replace Per Mertesacker who got injured last week.
Despite his impressive performances on our US tour, Rob Holding is thought to not be quite ready for first team action, and Arsene Wenger feels he’s still too young and inexperienced.
So many defenders have been linked with a move to The Emirates recently but Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi has emerged has sir Wenger’s prime target in recent days, and a report from Italian journalist, Emanuele Giulianelli – who works with Gazzetta Dello, claims we are about to agree a deal for the German international with the two clubs just £4.2m apart in their valuation of the player.
Giulianelli who has a good track record when it comes to transfers, tweeted on his Twitter account that Arsenal are discussing a possible deal with the German highly-rated defender:
Mustafi, Arsenal and Valencia are still €5mln far away for the fee. #afc

Despite the German international having a release clause of around £42million on his current contract with Valencia, Arsenal are expected to pay between £20 and £30million for Mustafi.
The 24-year-old ace went from Sampdoria to Valencia and has also won 12 caps for his country. Mustafi, 24, featured in the Euro 2016 tournament for Germany, and even got on the scoresheet with a goal in the 2-0 win over Ukraine.
