Five Strikers for Wenger to Consider at EURO 2016
It seems every time a transfer window comes around, Arsenal are linked with more and more strikers that Wenger should buy to solve the ‘crisis’ at the club. Wenger himself has been under increasing pressure from unhappy fans this campaign but should still be around for next season, so who should he be looking at to play up front?
With the European Championships taking place this summer in his home country there will be plenty of top players on show – some of whom will be looking for a move to the Premier League. Wenger has never been one to be carried away with a performance at a European Championships or a World Cup but there may be players that he already has his eyes on who could be among the key goal scorers at the ‘business end’ of the tournament.
You Can But Dream
Arsenal have been linked with Alexandre Lacazette – along with West Ham – but the striker who has had a very impressive season for Lyon has not been named in the France squad. One forward who would be a stellar signing is Atletico Madrid’s Antoine Griezmann. It is unlikely that the Frenchman could be persuaded to swap Madrid for north London but Wenger has promised to spend big this summer and a signing like this would require major funds.
Spanish Sensation
A title-winning striker that would be more likely to come to Arsenal is Juventus forward Alvaro Morata. Real Madrid could activate the buyback clause in his contract but it is more likely that he will leave Turin for big money. Arsenal would definitely have a fight on their hands but Wenger has been a long-time admirer and if the money is right he could be just the answer.
Poles Apart
One name that has been mentioned as a possible arrival at the Emirates is Polish front man Arkadiusz Milik. Many an English club have rued taking a goal scorer from the Dutch league but Milik has more skill than most and is tipped by many to star alongside Poland’s main man Lewandowski in France. Forty seven goals in two seasons in Amsterdam is pretty impressive and his all round ability would fit in well at Arsenal.
The Man from Marseille
Michy Batshuayi has looked good in what has been a very disappointing season for his club Marseille. The Belgian striker has attracted interest from a whole host of English clubs with Liverpool, West Ham and Spurs all keeping an eye on the youngster. Champions League football will be the main draw if Batshuayi decides to move in the summer so Wenger will be hoping that his part of north London is the more appealing.
Mario Class
With his playing time limited this season in Munich, Mario Götze could be interested in a move and the Premier League would seem like the perfect location for the immensely talented German. Although more of an attacking midfielder, Götze has been used as a very effective false nine and that kind of player could be just who Wenger is looking for. The Dortmund connection to Klopp means Liverpool are rivals for his signature but the promise of Champions League football should be more of an attraction.
Of course there are plenty of strikers not appearing in France this summer who Wenger should be interested in – Inter’s Mauro Icardi and Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain are two Argentinians that could be leaving Serie A – but the European Championships are a great place for Wenger to get close to the best players in Europe. Arsenal are in dire need of a striker now that Welbeck has been ruled out for another nine months so expect Wenger to have a busy summer.
