French Defender Wants Arsenal Move...

Arsene Wenger recently said that his defence was a priority area to strengthen this summer as he looks to win the Premier League title next season, and one of his targets is keen on a move to the Emirates.

Laurent Koscielny, the 24-year-old Lorient defender, has been linked with an £8.3 million move to Arsenal after impressing in the French top division and his agent has said the player wants to join the club.

It is believed that talks between the clubs are ongoing as Wenger looks to overhaul his side to improve on their third place Premier finish last season. The side's Premier League odds suggest they will challenge again next season, but the squad does need refreshing.

Veteran defenders William Gallas, Sol Campbell and Mickael Silvestre are all out of contract with the Gunners this summer and could move on to pastures new, so Wenger needs to bring in reinforcements and fancies Koscielny as a partner for Thomas Vermaelen in the heart of the Arsenal defence.

His agent Stephane Canard told France Football a deal is "not far away" from being agreed by both parties. 
"It is difficult to not listen to someone like Arsene Wenger when he is attracted. Any player is tempted to work with him," he said.
"Without being critical of Lorient, Laurent is 24-year-old and has others ambitions. He recently called his chairman and coach to tell them he absolutely wants to join Arsenal."

Koscielny isn't part of the France squad currently looking to justify their 2010 World Cup odds in South Africa, but as he is also eligible to play for Poland it seems likely he will get international football sooner or later.

Wenger has also been linked with Ajax's full back Gregory van der Wiel in recent weeks and the defender himself has said he thinks he would be a "good fit" for the Premier League.
