The Bidding War Closes...

< Previous | 6th July 2010 | Next story >

The football transfer market is in no way fun and games. It’s expensive, risky, and downright akin to the world’s oldest profession at times – you know which one we’re talking about. But every summer, millions exchange hands, players exchange teams, and big-market clubs hope their new infusion of talent can put them over the top.

In the case of Arsenal, this summer’s most sought after target was the 24-year-old freakishly talented centre-back from Lorient, Laurent Koscielny. Arsene Wenger decided the gifted player was worth gambling on, and the bidding process has already allegedly closed.

Obviously, the first offer in any bidding process is to measure reaction. And the first refusal is to exert authority and drive up the price. So it’s no surprise that the initial £8 million bid from Wenger was immediately shot down.

However, another bid was quickly made—specific amount undisclosed—and it appears as if Arsenal have struck a provisional deal with Lorient for Koscielny.

William Gallas is heading out the door for the Gunners. His contract is up and there seem to be no efforts to renegotiate. This leaves the door wide open for a player of Koscielny’s caliber to walk through, and Laurent has actually voiced his approval of Arsenal, stating that he would like to work with Wenger.

Unofficial numbers suggest around a £10 million transfer fee for Laurent, with, of course, great personal increases should the young player live up to the hype. Laurent’s arrival seems imminent, pending a few personal term tweaks and a medical.

Bidding games aren’t like casino games, though. You can’t just put your money down and spin the big wheel. No one knows this more than Wenger, a formidable presence in the summer transfer world, and often one of its biggest critics.

It’s actually surprising that a deal was struck so quickly and without Lorient attempting to hold out. It is possible Lorient felt Wenger wouldn’t wait around forever, or perhaps Laurent just commands enough respect to be dealt quickly for the best transition. Regardless of how it went down, the Gunners certainly need the talent and at only 24, Laurent could be a star for many years to come.
